Chapter Seventeen

The area in front of me was slightly lit by the moon behind me, but there were still voids of darkness around my room’s edges.

Rune’s lithe form stepped out of the shadows to my right, in the corner closest to me. He must have run up here to beat me, and with his injury that must have been extremely painful for him, did the man seriously not feel pain? Flicking my wrist, I sheathed my knife. I was forced to lift my head to stare into his silver eyes, glittering in the moonlight.

“Do you not feel pain?” I had to ask as I ran my gaze down his delicious length, my gaze sticking to his thigh for a second too long.

His voice came out deep and sultry when he answered, “I’ve endured worse. It’ll take a lot more to knock me down, queeny.” I wanted to know what ‘worse’ was if a knife to the thigh barely affected him.

He reached his hand to my forearm, rubbing his hand down it. I was suddenly hyper-aware we were in a room with a bed—alone. Nervously, I glanced to the floor, not ready to be scrutinized under his intense stare. His hand left my arm and reached under my chin, forcing my gaze back to him. His brow was pinched in some emotion I couldn’t quite put my finger on. Anger? Frustration? Hurt?

“I’m sorry I left you in the courtyard like that,” his voice sounded disappointed, but why? So he’d left me in the courtyard. It’s not like he abandoned me in a different country. Besides, it’s not like I really wanted him around me at that moment.

I brushed his hand off of me and took a step back, crossing my arms over my chest. “It’s not a big deal. Could you please leave?” I asked as I turned my gaze toward the window. I didn’t want to look at his beautiful face; if I did, I knew I wouldn’t be able to ask him to leave again.

He stepped forward, into my space, and it took everything in me not to melt into the heat radiating off of him. I held my ground, though, peeking up at him with a scowl on my face.

“Are you sure you want me to leave? Say the word and I will.” My heart felt like it was going to thump right out of my chest. My core slickened as he leaned forward into me, his eyes locked on my lips. He had his hands wrapped behind his back, giving me every opportunity to push him away or step away from him.

I had no idea what it was about this man. From the moment I met him, there had been this pull to him I couldn’t deny. I didn’t know what his true intentions were, or what was going on in my life, but I also couldn’t push him away.

I’d tried.

Oh, how I’d tried.

I’d even stabbed the man, but here he was in my room trying to kiss me.
